NCFE/CACHE Level 2 Technical Certificate in Working with Children in Early Years and Primary Settings

What does this qualification cover?

This qualification covers a range of key subject areas that provide learners with the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to care for and educate children aged between 0 and 11 years 11 months old.

It has been designed to support learners to progress onto level 3 qualifications across a number of sectors, including the early years educator sector, the supporting teaching and learning sector, and the children and young people sector.

Who is it suitable for?

This qualification is suitable for learners aged 16 or above who wish to progress onto further education or into the workplace.

What are the entry requirements?

Learners must be at least 16 years old and must be working in an Early Years setting.

How is this qualification structured?

This qualification is made up of 6 mandatory units. Learners must complete all 6 units in order to achieve the qualification.

How is it assessed?

To gain this qualification, learners must achieve a minimum of a Pass grade in each of the six mandatory units. These units will be internally assessed and graded Pass, Merit or Distinction. In addition, learners will need to complete:

• A Professional Skills Record. This will be completed over a minimum of 120 hours of placement in a real work environment and will be assessed by the supervisor and Centre assessor in an early years and primary school setting. This Professional Skills Record will be graded Achieved or Not Yet Achieved.
• A synoptic short answer examination, which will be undertaken at the end of the qualification. This will be externally set and assessed, and will be graded Pass, Merit or Distinction. All units, the Professional Skills Record and the short answer examination grades will be combined to give an overall graded result of Pass, Merit or Distinction. Full achievement of the qualification will not be possible until all components are complete.

How long will it take to complete this qualification?

The Certificate can usually be completed in one year.

Do you need to be working to take this qualification?

This qualification has a minimum requirement of 120 work placement hours. However, we recommend learners undertake at least 200 hours of work placement.

What related qualifications can you progress to?

This qualification allows progression onto Level 3 Early Years Educator qualifications and other Level 3 qualifications relating to Childcare, Health and Social Care or Supporting Teaching and Learning.

Which type of job roles can you apply for on completion?

Learners can progress in the workplace in a variety of job roles, such as:

• Nursery assistant
• Classroom assistant
• Pre-school assistant.

NCFE/CACHE Level 3 Diploma in Early Years Education and Care (Early Years Educator)

What does this qualification cover?

The Level 3 Diploma in Early Years Education and Care (Early Years Educator) prepares learners to become Early Years Educators, enabling them to work with children from birth to 5 years and gain knowledge of children aged 5 to 7 years.

Upon achievement of this qualification it is intended that learners will be able to access higher education or enter the workforce as Early Years Educators. This qualification confers the licence to practise as an Early Years Educator.

UCAS points have been allocated to this qualification depending on the grade achieved:

• A*: 112
• A: 96
• B: 80
• C: 64•
• D: 48

Who is it suitable for?

This qualification is suitable for a range of learners, either working or wishing to work in early years education and care. It is also suitable for those wishing to progress to higher education.

What are the entry requirements?

Learners must be at least 16 years old and must be working in an Early Years setting. We recommend you already hold Functional Skills Level 2 or GCSE A*-C (9-4) in Maths and English.

Early Years Educator: GCSE English and Maths Requirement

All learners who achieve an Early Years Educator qualification will need GCSE English and Maths A*-C or Functional Skills Level 2 English and Maths to count in the ratios at Level 3 in childcare settings.

We recommend you complete these awards prior to starting your Level 3.

How is this qualification structured?

This qualification is structured the units around four themes:
• Theme 1: Health and well-being
• Theme 2: Legislation, frameworks and professional practice
• Theme 3: Play, development and learning for school readiness
• Theme 4: Professional development

How is it assessed?

To gain this qualification the learner will need to:

• Pass 27 Mandatory units
• Pass longitudinal study
• Pass 3 externally set and marked assessments

Please note: the assessment opportunities for all externally set and marked assessments for this qualification are limited to one attempt and one further reattempt opportunity (undertaking an alternative assessment).

External Assessment

This qualification is graded A*–D. The final grade awarded for the qualification will be
based on the overall marks achieved for the Short Answer Examination, Reflective
Study and Extended Essay.

Within each qualification there is a maximum of one further opportunity after the first submission for learners to submit the External Assessment in order to achieve a pass grade or to improve a grade.

How long will it take to complete this qualification?

This qualification will take 2 years to complete.

What related qualifications can you progress to?

Learners can progress to the Level 4 Certificate for the Early Years Advanced Practitioner or a Foundation Degree.
